Colleges and universities nationwide are innovating to support the needs of students, faculty and campus communities, and Barnes & Noble College is continuously innovating to support the institutions we serve as a partner with deep engagement on campus. In the summer of 2023, we launched a new initiative to support student and campus well-being, in response to research that indicates students are struggling to maintain their overall wellness – and looking for solutions.

Be Well. Be You.™ by Barnes & Noble College is a thoughtfully curated collection of wellness products designed to calm and recharge the mind and body, available through our campus stores and ecommerce sites. We sat down post-launch with institutional partners and wellness experts from the University of Maryland, the University of Tampa, Lifelines and Rae Wellness to discuss how BNC campus store teams are using Be Well. Be You. as a springboard to talk about and share tools for well-being.

Watch the full discussion and read on to learn 5 innovative ways campus stores can play a meaningful part in supporting students’ well-being journey from our five speakers:

——-

1. CREATE FRESH OPPORUNITIES TO START THE WELL-BEING CONVERSATION

“I count on the campus bookstore, which is full of colleagues who are part of our caring community. They began to think about Be Well. Be You. as a way to start a conversation with customers. It wasn’t just about ‘buy your spirit gear’ – which is still important – but it was also about ‘how are you doing, and have you seen these tools.’ I think those nudges to think about how you’re doing is sometimes what a student needs, what a colleague needs, what a faculty member needs to even engage in that course.

The Be Well. Be You. merchandise says that it’s okay to take care of yourself. No one’s perfect. We’re all searching for an answer about how to feel better or even how to feel different.”

Marsha Guenzler-Stevens, PhD: Director, Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life, Division of Student Affairs, University of Maryland

2. GIVE STUDENTS TANGIBLE TOOLS TO GET STARTED

Sometimes students need something tangible as they start their wellness journey, to get them involved and started learning about what wellness approaches are right for them. It’s very personal.

When I found out about Be Well. Be You. and really started to learn more about the different products and solutions that were featured, I immediately thought about our Live Well UT students who are holding events that they deem to be important and educational for their peers. The types of products or giveaways they’re using to engage with their fellow students are these exact types of things. That is what students want and are looking for and need.”

Tiffany Nelson, Assistant Director of Wellness Services, University of Tampa

3. MAKE TOOLS FOR WELL-BEING ACCESSIBLE FOR STUDENTS

“Wellness should be for everyone. It does not have to be expensive or a full-time job. And that’s why it’s critical that students understand that they can build a well-being toolbox. They can grab one tool one day and something totally different the next. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can take as little as a minute and a half to execute on some of these things that they need so desperately throughout the day.

The goal is getting students to focus and thrive in the now so that they can get beyond the now into the future that they’re creating in college. Taking a multifaceted yet personalized approach to well-being is how we can support the next generation. They are going to conquer the world.”

Angie Tebbe, CEO/Co-Founder, Rae Wellness

4. DEVELOP WELL-BEING EVENTS AND PROGRAMS FOR ADDITIONAL ENGAGEMENT

“Barnes & Noble College has a mission to support students’ academic success. That’s what drives our decisions and how we curate the products in our stores – and it’s why we had to do something meaningful to support the well-being of our campus communities. Our Be Well. Be You. wellness collection provides tools and ideas to help people identify what they need in their own body and soul to stay healthy, then start to meet those needs.

We didn’t want to just put products on shelves. The most important thing for us was engaging with our college and university partners to support the well-being journey of students and everyone on campus. It’s about what we can do to really become part of the solution, including workshops, speaking engagements and one-on-one interactions.”

Celeste Risimini-Johnson: Chief Merchandise & Operations Officer, BNC

5. PICK PARTNERS ALIGNED WITH YOUR PRIORITIES AND VALUES

“We have had thousands and thousands of partners in our experience running Melissa and Doug, and there has been nothing even remotely close to the extraordinary Barnes & Noble College team. And I get truly emotional when I talk about them. BNC acknowledges that Be Well. Be You. is more than just product, but that doesn’t even touch on the soul that they all put toward this effort and how much they truly care. It is beyond anything I’ve ever seen.”

Melissa Bernstein, Co-Founder, Melissa & Doug Toys; Co-Founder, Lifelines

Students participating in Barnes & Noble College’s First Day® Complete program have spoken — not only are most sharing they achieved better grades in the term, but they also agree the program was more convenient and reduced the stress and cost of buying course materials. Positive feedback from students (and administrators) is driving adoption of the equitable access program at more and more institutions of all types and sizes, including four-year state colleges or universities, four-year private colleges or universities, and two-year state community colleges or technical colleges. It’s a timely example of how the campus store remains relevant and impactful in supporting students on their academic journey—and of how BNC is innovating to meet the highest priority needs of partner institutions.

POSITIVE IMPACT ON STUDENTS

First Day Complete removes barriers from higher education by improving access, affordability and convenience. Students receive their required course materials, in both physical and digital formats, before the first day of class. Costs for those course materials are bundled as part of tuition or a course charge, saving students an average of 35-50%.

Students consistently provide strong feedback about First Day Complete and the positive impact on their academic success. Recently, Barnes & Noble College conducted an online survey of students who participated in the program during Spring 2023. Nearly 4,000 students across 110 campuses responded, representing four-year public and private institutions, and two-year state community colleges.

RAPID PROGRAM GROWTH

First Day Complete continues to experience rapid growth in institutional adoption, as more and more higher education institutions recognize the benefits, including lowering the cost of education, improving student outcomes and reducing stress. A total of 157 campus stores are implementing First Day Complete in Fall 2023, a significant increase from 111 stores in Fall 2022. And, while the initial participants in the program largely were undergraduate students, their endorsement has prompted a number of postgraduate programs to participate as well.

In total, nearly 800,000 students nationwide will have access to First Day Complete by the fall, and more schools are signing on for the spring to bring the program’s benefits to their students as soon as possible.

BNC partners with institutions of all sizes to help them achieve their highest priority goals, including lowering the cost of education, improving student outcomes, and reducing stress. First Day Complete offers valuable benefits in each of these areas, helping students be more prepared for the academic term, enhance their overall experience and improve their academic outcomes.

“As important as textbooks are, most students delay purchasing them because of cost, and many avoid purchasing them altogether. That can have a serious impact on their chances of success. We want to give students every advantage, so we’re excited to launch the Eagle Advantage program.”

–Dr. Scott Ralls, Wake Tech President

On campuses across the U.S., college students admit to finding it difficult to maintain their overall wellness. Three in four students say that stress is negatively impacting their ability to focus, learn and do well in school, according to the newest Student Voice survey from Inside Higher Ed and College Pulse, which focused on health and wellness. In a recent survey by Barnes & Noble College, more than 8 in 10 students (83%) reported experiencing feelings of significant stress or anxiety during the semester. That is why we’re launching a new initiative to support student, faculty and campus community well-being.

Students are seeking out tools to help with these issues and ways to create paths to greater self-care. The most recent BNC COLLEGE 2030™ report revealed that students have developed a variety of coping strategies over the last several years, including “making time to unwind/for my interests” (69%) and “taking care of my body” (51%) through actions such as eating healthy and maintaining a regular sleep schedule.

To address this growing need, BNC has launched an innovative retail collection that aligns with the coping strategies students are exploring. Be Well. Be You.™ by Barnes & Noble College is a thoughtfully curated collection of wellness products for mind and body that are now available through our campus stores and ecommerce sites. Launched in June 2023, the collection features products designed to calm and recharge the mind and body of students.

DESIGNED TO APPEAL TO GEN Z

Be Well. Be You. by Barnes & Noble College encourages a holistic approach to wellness and self-care, with products to promote calm, sleep and energy; reduce anxiety; and relieve aches and pains. BNC carefully selected brands to collaborate with for the collection, prioritizing a variety of items that are modern, relevant, priced for accessibility and appealing to Gen Z.

We are also excited to introduce an exclusive line of products as part of this initiative. Co-founded by Melissa Bernstein, Co-Founder, Melissa & Doug Toys, Lifelines’ Sensory Immersion™ products are a groundbreaking, science-backed collection of tools to help users live with less stress and more joy. Lifelines is available only at BNC stores in the college retail market.

Lifelines’ collection of tools is designed to switch on the body’s most effective stress relievers: the senses. After spending 30 years inspiring children to discover a sense of wonder through play, Melissa Bernstein created Lifelines to help adults relieve stress through rediscovering that childlike sense of wonder.

Bernstein and the Lifelines team will participate in a series of events and workshops to help students “build their well-being toolkit” and promote the collection on campuses in the coming months.

“College students are dear to me, and my partnership with Barnes & Noble College is designed to help them thrive. Our Lifelines collection uses the latest research on the relationship between stress, hormones, and the brain to help you work with your body to unleash the power of your six senses. By sharing wellness-focused content, as well as offering tangible tools and products, we can help students and the entire campus community feel more calm, content and joyful,” said Bernstein.

“The Be Well. Be You. collection transcends simple product – it’s about meeting human needs.”

PRODUCTS TO RECHARGE, RESTORE, AND RELAX

Students, faculty, and all those served by BNC campus stores have access to Be Well. Be You. and can create a personalized approach within the collection to meet their individual wellness needs*. Featured brands and products include:

From Self-Op to BNC Operated: Pitt-Greensburg’s Campus Store Transformation https://www.bncollege.com/insight/post-webinar-implementation-greensburg/ Thu, 11 May 2023 16:03:56 +0000 https://www.bncollege.com/?p=18081 The Director of Finance and Risk Management at University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg shared insights on transitioning store operations to Barnes & Noble College, securing buy-in for an equitable access program, and three key factors in the university’s successful launch.

The post From Self-Op to BNC Operated: Pitt-Greensburg’s Campus Store Transformation appeared first on Barnes & Noble College.

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (Pitt-Greensburg) operated its own campus store for decades – until the increasing complexity of collegiate bookstore and retail operations led the institution to find a new approach. Pitt-Greensburg selected Barnes & Noble College as their partner to operate the campus store and implement the First Day® Complete equitable access program.

CHOOSING FIRST DAY® COMPLETE

First Day Complete is an innovative course material model that removes barriers from higher education by improving access, affordability and convenience. The ability to facilitate a more successful academic journey for students and faculty was a key factor in Pitt-Greensburg’s decision to partner with BNC.

“The program just made sense to us because the greatest importance was for the students, that it would be helping them to keep their costs down,” said Ronna Colland, the university’s Director of Finance and Risk Management.

IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM

Colland highlighted three key elements that contributed to a successful start to First Day Complete at Pitt-Greensburg.

1. Resources and Planning Support

I’m a planner, and BNC had a great plan for us that brought in all our stakeholders and made sure that we would put processes in place on time. They were able to give us marketing information, both marketing the program itself and materials explaining to faculty what they needed to do to make it successful. Information for our entire community.

The plan went beyond just our students and our academic advising and business offices to include stakeholders such as our advisory board members. They wanted to hear about what we were doing to help the students be successful. We really tried to make sure that we were pulling as many people together as we could to let them know about the program.”

2. Adoption & Insights Portal (AIP)

“The adoption portal was like an aha moment for the committee as we were listening to the proposals. Just the ease of use seemed like a tremendous advantage.

We did a Zoom session where faculty could ask questions and see a demo of the Adoption & Insights Portal. We also made sure they knew they could contact the store manager with any questions. Just giving them the knowledge and communicating with them every step of the way seemed to be the greatest things we could do to make this successful.”

3. Program Communication and Branding

“One of our lessons learned is to communicate with all your stakeholders and make sure they understand how the program works. That includes everyone from prospective students and parents coming to take a look at our campus on preview day to the new students coming for orientation.

Also, at first, we just referred to the program as First Day Complete. Just this past year, we rebranded to the Bobcat Book Bundle. I think that was a good idea because the name gives the program a more meaningful feel – and it tells you what it is, a book bundle.

Making sure everyone had a better understanding of what the program is, how it works and where you can go if you have questions was key for us. It all comes to communication, in my opinion.

DECIDING TO TRANSITION OPERATIONS

The move to equitable access is a key factor driving colleges and universities to partner with BNC. However, many institutions like Pitt-Greensburg also value BNC’s retail and operations expertise, transforming the campus store and creating better experiences for students and customers in a complex environment.

“We were challenged by resources. We had some profitability concerns. It was becoming more and more costly to operate a store on our own and, from a human resource standpoint, difficult to find qualified managers and people that know a lot about textbooks and sourcing the materials,” said Colland.

The selection process began in January 2020 and moved quickly to ensure the university had the support it needed during a time of rapid evolution. As one of the University of Pittsburgh’s five regional campuses, Pitt-Greensburg coordinated decision-making on its own campus as well as with university administrators at the Pittsburgh campus.

“We had a committee that heard the proposals, we made our selection, and within about a month and a half, the transition happened. I know that sounds really hard to believe, but it was a time that called for all hands on board to help,” said Colland.

“Barnes & Noble College was a tremendous partner for that, with the timing and just everything happening. The partnership has been a huge help to our campus – and especially to our students, who are now getting their course materials on time.”

First Day Complete: You Asked, We Answered https://www.bncollege.com/insight/qa-post-webinar-marketing/ Tue, 18 Apr 2023 19:06:50 +0000 https://www.bncollege.com/?p=18053 During BNC’s recent webinar on equitable access, audience members submitted questions on topics such as publisher availability, price, OER and more. Here’s what our panel of faculty and administrators had to say.

The post First Day Complete: You Asked, We Answered appeared first on Barnes & Noble College.

Faculty and administrators shared 7 reasons to consider First Day® Complete and other insights in our recent webinar, Real Talk: Where Could You Be with Equitable Access? The panelists also answered questions from the audience on publisher availability, price, OER and other ways the First Day Complete removes barriers from higher education and improves student outcomes. The following are their responses to the most frequently asked questions.

AFFORDABILITY

Improving affordability is one way First Day® Complete helps remove barriers from higher education. Questions about pricing and costs are at the top of the list for many institutions looking into equitable access programs, and while every program is different, the results are clear for First Day Complete. Students save, on average, 35 to 50% across their entire academic journey – and they notice. Nationwide, 79% of students said the program provided them more affordable course materials.

How do you convince faculty and students they are getting a better price than with online retailers, etc.?

Dr. Amanda Rosenzweig: “I can speak for the biological sciences, as our materials are usually much more expensive. For one class, we may have a textbook, a lab atlas and a secondary photo atlas – as well as lab materials – and they’re all getting it for the cost per credit. There’s no possible way to go on Amazon and even piecemeal this material for the cost they’re getting.”

Can students rent materials? Do they have the option to purchase a book if they do not wish to return it?

Brigid O’Reilly: “The print books are set up as rentals to help drive affordability, so students will return their books at the end of the term. BNC does offer a rental buyout option as well. If a student wants to retain a particular book, it’s offered to them at the end of the term for a discounted rate. Typically, only 2% of students who rent books choose the buyout option, but it is absolutely there for students, should they want to do that.”

Dr. Amanda Rosenzweig: “Our students work directly with the bookstore and the publisher. For the digital-only books we provide them, for a small price – it’s actually very affordable – students can purchase a softbound, print version that’s delivered directly to them. It depends on the publisher if it’s black and white or in color, but our students get it at a discounted rate. It’s been a great option.”

ACADEMIC FREEDOM

With First Day Complete, institutions have the flexibility to customize their program with the most comprehensive catalog of lowest priced print and digital course materials. Faculty maintain full academic freedom to select the course materials that best suit their course in their preferred format, and students receive the lowest per credit hour price.

Are schools limited in terms of textbook publishers?

Brigid O’Reilly: “We have expansive partnerships with publishers – faculty can use all kinds of content. Our Adoption & Insights Portal actually provides some affordable options, OER and low-cost materials, so there really aren’t any limitations. Faculty have full academic freedom to select the materials they want.”

So faculty can still use OER?

Brigid O’Reilly: “The beauty of OER is that it works really well with First Day Complete, because the program combines all affordable initiatives to help bring down the overall price for students. When we provide a custom price for each institution, we’re taking a very thorough look at the courses and the course materials that are adopted by faculty. When OER and low-cost materials are factored in, it really helps reduce costs and provides savings for all students.”

FUNCTIONALITY AND FLEXIBILITY

First Day Complete has the latest technology and systems to deliver the most seamless and personalized equitable access experience for students, including a proprietary, best-in-class opt-out management platform for institutions using a course-fee model.

How has opt-out worked, and has it been challenging for you and your students?

Ronna Colland: “In our first year, opt-out was at 30%, and that was to be expected. It was a new program, and students were trying to figure everything out. Now, we are down to 14%, which is really great. I attribute that to the fact that students understand more about the program and its advantages.

As far as how our opt-outs are handled, the students are billed for their book charge on their bill. And if they choose to opt-out, they have until the end of the period to contact or notify the business office. We have a form that’s on our website that they can use.

The business office is good because they can also answer questions about this and explain to students that they are opting out of everything – it’s all or nothing for that particular term. I think that’s important, so they make the right choice. The students understand that the course materials they may have been looking at on the LMS will most likely go away if they opt out.”

Brigid O’Reilly: For institutions that do not want to manage the opt-out process, Barnes & Noble College does have an opt-out platform as part of First Day Complete. It’s optional for an institution to use. Second, what we’re also seeing is that with more communications, students are opting back in. What Ronna said is very powerful – a student really needs to understand the benefits of the program and what they’re opting out of to make that decision.”

The most recent AVP of Auxiliary Services shares insights on student and faculty communication, the benefits of more access, convenience, and affordability, plus parents’ positive response to the program.

The third in a three-part series spotlighting Barnes & Noble College partner institutions that are preparing to or have implemented the First Day Complete equitable access program. The series covers what to consider, implementation, and maintenance of a successful program. Check out part one with Sonoma State University and part two with Coastal Carolina University.

dr. kristy vinenne talking about first day complete perspectives

As of the Spring 2023 semester, more than 115 campuses across the country have implemented First Day® Complete, Barnes & Noble College’s innovative equitable access program. Each one has unique insights to share that confirm how the highly customizable platform removes barriers to student success by improving course material access, affordability, and convenience.

Spring 2023 also marks seven semesters of First Day Complete at Sam Houston State University (SHSU). Dr. Kristy Vienne, formerly the AVP of Auxiliary Services at SHSU, and now the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services at Lone Star College System, recently shared the benefits that have resonated with students and parents – and what surprised her about the response from parents. She also offered advice on keeping key audiences engaged through all stages of the program.

Positive Parent Feedback

“When we started this program, we thought explaining it to students and parents would be our biggest challenge. And that just has not been the case. Students love First Day Complete, and parents love it even more. It’s easy for them to understand, and it’s one more thing to take off their plate.

That was an ‘aha’ or a surprise moment for me because I really thought, ‘I’ve got to sell this to the parents. I’ve got to make sure they understand.’ But parents were coming up and saying, ‘Oh great, this is wonderful.’

Access, Convenience, Affordability—and Customer Service

People are looking for things that simplify their life. This program is easy, and it really takes away the lift. They also like that if a book happens to change – and we all know we don’t want that to happen, but it does happen – we will make it right. We will handle the customer service aspect and switch out the book. There’s no risk to the student.

I’ve had parents and students come back in and say, ‘I saved $300 being in the program.’ However, we found people participate for a variety of reasons – like convenience and customer service. I also had a parent tell me, ‘I just have to be honest with you, I was going to opt out. I went online and spent four hours researching my kid’s books. I went to all the sites.’ And then she said, ‘I realized I might have saved $28 outside the program, which may or may not have included shipping, because shipping varied.’ She said, ‘You know what? Help me opt back into this program. It was not worth the $28 for the four hours that I spent researching all this.’”

Ongoing Communications

“As you go through the program, every stage has its unique challenges. Communication needs to be constant. There’s a new group of students and faculty every semester. It requires dedicated communication plans and strategies that have to be on target and keyed up, ready to go.

When I first got into higher education, I felt like we had downtime. Now, I don’t know what downtime is anymore. And this program is no exception to that. It’s not necessarily a challenge, just something to be apprised and aware of. Stay ahead of the game and constantly make sure that you’re on top of communication, because the program is wonderful. It can be a lift, but it’s worth it for the campus in terms of the benefits to the students.”

Barnes & Noble College posed the question. Faculty and administrators answered it—during a recent webinar on how First Day® Complete removes barriers from higher education by improving access, convenience, and affordability. The conversation yielded 7 compelling reasons for institutions to consider implementing the program to positively impact student outcomes.

Partners from University of the Cumberlands, Delgado Community College and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg dissected their First Day Complete programs and the positive impact each has had on student outcomes, faculty’s ability to teach from day one, and the institution overall. They also answered audience questions to give a comprehensive view of the faculty and administrator experience.

7 reasons to consider first day complete

1. IT’S GAME-CHANGING FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY

“First Day Complete has been a game changer for our student preparedness, retention and attrition. It’s a breath of fresh air for both faculty and students because students are now coming to class prepared. It is included in their tuition, so it’s not an extra burden or an extra cost outside of what is already bundled together.”

Dr. Amanda Rosenzweig, Biology Professor, College Wide Biology Department Chair, Delgado Community College

2. FACULTY RETAIN COMPLETE ACADEMIC FREEDOM

“Probably the number one question from faculty across the board was, ‘Will I still have academic freedom? Can I still select the textbook that I want to use for my class?’ So that was a resounding, ‘Yes, you can. It doesn’t have anything to do with your academic freedom. Get whatever textbook you would’ve gotten before, and that’s the textbook we’ll use.’ Once faculty felt comfortable that they could still have that academic freedom, it wasn’t a question at all.”

Lois McWhorter, Department Chair, Hutton School of Business, University of the Cumberlands

3. IT MAKES GETTING COURSE MATERIALS EASIER

“I think the benefits that drove buy-in were student affordability and making it easier for the students to get their course materials; the fact that it could be integrated with our learning management system; and that the adoption portal for faculty was an easy process. The adoption portal was like an ‘aha!’ moment for the committee as we were listening to the proposals. Just the ease of use seemed like a tremendous advantage.

Ronna Colland, CPA, Director, Finance and Risk Management, University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg

4. FACULTY CAN TEACH ON DAY 1

“We all were really excited about the opportunities for our students because First Day Complete honestly makes our experience a little bit easier, getting the semester going. It was a change, but this change was really positive. Our students were prepared on Day 1, and we could start teaching on Day 1. It was accessible. It was better for all.

We weren’t making accommodations and one-off changes to support a single student whose money hadn’t come through, who didn’t understand the process or just could not afford books, period. The program provided an experience for all students to start off on the same baseline.”

Dr. Amanda Rosenzweig

5. IMPROVED STUDENT ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Our data showed that success for students increased after we moved to this configuration – quicker access to course materials and eight-week sessions.

One of the important considerations we learned was the importance of being able to give feedback the first week of classes. Especially for first-generation college students, who may be very anxious about going to college. The feedback they get that first week in some cases helps them decide whether or not they’re going to stay. So having access to the textbook material and all the course material from day one really makes a difference.”

Lois McWhorter

6. IT REMOVES BARRIERS TO ACCESS

“Our students often don’t understand the importance of having the proper material to support them through their learning journey. So going to First Day Complete has been phenomenal in the sense that it’s an all-in-one package. And, since it’s a set price, the students are aware from day one what they will be spending based on their credit enrollment.

Education is a priority for students, but daily living occurrences – electricity, food, travel, work – those are also priorities. This program allowed us to give students a very clear directive of what they can expect in their tuition and how this is going to benefit them moving forward.

Dr. Amanda Rosenzweig

7. IMPROVED CAMPUS EXPERIENCES

First Day Complete has been a tremendous help to our campus and mostly to our students because they’re now getting their books on time. It’s just a whole different environment, and it’s been a really good experience for us.”
